Survey among University members on sexual harassment
This year we conducted a comprehensive survey among the university population to map the phenomenon of sexual harassment on campus. Over 4,700 participants responded to the survey. Attached is a link to a summary of the findings and the full survey report.
The survey results indicate a relatively high rate of harassment incidents, particularly of lower severity types. We also found that the reporting rate to the Commission is low, especially among men. We encourage anyone who has been affected or exposed to harassment to report to us so we can provide assistance. Reports can also be made anonymously.
We are currently analyzing the survey findings and will draw conclusions to improve the Commission's activity and to raise awareness to this important issue.
Report on sexual harassment complaints in the academic year 2022-2023
In the academic year 2022-2023 we handled approximately 95 applications, of which 48 were complaints of sexual harassment at the university. The full report submitted to the Authority for the Advancement of the Status of Women can be viewed on the commission's website: https://en.hatrada.huji.ac.il/annual-report.
Here are some examples of cases handled by the commission:
- A retired senior academic staff member sexually harassed a postdoctoral researcher he was mentoring, both verbally and physically. Following the complaint, disciplinary actions were taken against him, resulting in a plea agreement. As part of the agreement, he was banned from entering campus as well as from supervising students. The postdoctoral researcher continues her research under a different supervisor (funded by the offender).
- Another case involved a student who physically and verbally harassed several female students. He faced disciplinary charges and was expelled from the university for three years, along with additional penalties.
- We were informed of cases where faculty members used irrelevant sexual content in their teaching. Conversations were held with these lecturers, clarifying that such content should not be used. The lecturers committed to avoiding this in the future.
- We also addressed complaints from student dormitories regarding inappropriate behavior. We made it clear to the specific residents (and to all dormitory residents) that they must respect others' boundaries and privacy, and be aware of their impact on their surroundings.
- The Commission received complaints regarding external employees on campus. As part of this, an external employee who sexually harassed students was dismissed.
Training and instruction on sexual harassment
This year, we continued an extensive workshop project held across several campuses, in which many faculty members and students participated in workshops on sexual harassment and its prevention. We also conducted targeted training sessions in various units as needed.
We are here to assist you with any question, complaint, or consultation, and your inquiries will be handled with the utmost discretion.
The Commission offers mental health support in cases of sexual harassment through the Student Counselling Services or through the Commission’s team of assistors.
We would also be glad to hear suggestions or initiatives to promote awareness and reporting on this topic.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Remember, if we do not stop sexual harassment, it will continue and more people will be hurt.
On this occasion we wish to thank the university administration for their full cooperation.
Wishing everyone a good year that allows us all to study, research, and work in a productive, peaceful, and respectful atmosphere.
We are here for you!
